Man accused of encouraging wife to fight sentenced

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - A Decatur man who encouraged his wife to fight in a video that went viral on Facebook has been sentenced.

30-year-old Kenneth Wells was sentenced to 18 months probation.

Wells pleaded guilty to one count of endangering the life or health of a child.

The fight happened in the 900 block of East Garfield Ave. on Aug. 18. Children from ages 4 to 11 watched.

Police said the parents gathered the children around to watch while their mothers fought each other.

Officers said Wells shouted fight instructions to his wife, 26-year-old Shinka Brown, as she fought with 36-year-old Torianna Reed.

The fight reportedly happened after a child in Reed's family broke the finger of a child in Wells family on a school bus.

Video of the mothers' fight had been viewed 2 million times with 44,000 shares and 16,000 comments before being removed.

Since Wells entered a plea deal, charges of aggravated battery and mob action were dismissed, along with six additional charges of child endangerment.
