Counterfeit bills circulating in Effingham area

EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND) - Effingham police are investigating seeing an increase of counterfeit bills being circulated.

Multiple businesses and individuals in the Effingham area have come across these bills.

Almost a dozen instances have been reported just in September.

The majority of the counterfeit bills are $100 bills. They look real, but lack certain identity features.

Some of the money has writing on it that states "For Motion Picture Purposes... It is Not Legal Tender."

Police said many of the bills include foreign writing such as Chinese which is stamped in pink or red ink.

If you suspect a counterfeit bill has been given to you, police give this advice.

  • Do not put yourself in danger
  • Do not return the bill to the passer
  • Delay the passer with some excuse, if possible
  • Observe the passer's description and write down their vehicle license plate numbers if you can
  • Contact law enforcement
  • DO NOT handle the counterfeit note. Put it inside a protective cover until it can be given to a police officer
  • Surrender the note ONLY to police

If you have any information about the fake currency, call Effingham Police at (217) 342-5318.
