Springfield considering new technology to improve fire response times

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A proposal by the Springfield Fire Department to buy green light technology to improve response times has been advanced by the city council.

The technology should help improve emergency response times along the Veterans Parkway corridor.

It would cost $141,000 to buy and install the technology at 16 intersections and on four fire vehicles at Fire Stations 12 and 9.

$9,700 will also be given by the Foreign Fire Insurance Board towards the project.

The technology is radio-based and would help move along traffic by changing lights to green along an outfitted fire rig's path to an emergency situation.

A final vote on the project should come at the Nov. 7 city council meeting.
