More than 18,000 pounds of food collected by UIS students for food banks


SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - More than 18,000 pounds of food was collected by University of Illinois Springfield students Halloween night for area food banks.

More than 200 students went door to door collecting cans.

17,171 pounds of food will go to the Central Illinois Foodbank.

924 pounds will go to the on campus UIS Cares Food Pantry.

16 teams of students canvassed neighborhoods last week to explain the project. 

Students from the Tri-Sigma sorority collected the most food, bringing in 3,032 pounds of food in the Westwood Forum and Mill Creek subdivisions.
