Winter Warming Center opens in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - The Winter Warming Center will be open Thursday, Nov. 1 in Springfield.

New services will help people get stable and permanent housing.

The center is located at 1015 E. Madison St. It opens from mid-November through March 31 every year.

The shelter is owned by the City of Springfield and operated by Helping Hands.

It provides an additional 48 emergency shelter beds that are open to both men and women during winter months.

People get a nightly meal, and AA meetings are offered.

This year, the shelter will also offer on-site mental health services, case management (help getting an ID, income, and other needs), and other services.

The hours of operation will expand to 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. on weekdays and 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. on weekends and holidays.

The increased resources are being made possible by a grant from the Illinois Department of Health and Human Services.
