County Clerk Bean gets more time with Border Collie

Decatur, Ill (WAND) – Macon County Clerk Steve Bean will soon be able to see the boys of summer in the spring as he retires after overseeing elections for 28 years.

“I’ve got a soon to be two-year-old Border Collie that wants me to spend more time with her,” Bean told WAND’s Doug Wolfe.  “I hope to go to spring training.  Do some more traveling.”

Bean spent Tuesday at several polling locations making sure things run smoothly.  Based on early voting turnout this year Bean hopes the county board helps the new clerk since he expects early voting in 2020 to be substantially higher.

Bean says his most satisfying accomplishment has been helping a blind voter cast a ballot with new equipment.

“She could put the earphones on and have it read to her.  All the time as a blind person she always had to have assistance.  That woman cried and telling me how happy she was to finally get to vote a secret ballot was probably the highlight of my career with elections.”

Bean says he will be happy to assist the new clerk if they need help for the next election.  He will leave office in December.
