Champaign County elects first Democrat sheriff in decades


CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) – Democrat Dustin Heuerman will be the new sheriff for Champaign County.

Heuerman is the first Democrat to hold the sheriff position in decades. He defeated Republican Allen Jones.

Current Sheriff, Dan Walsh will retire at the end of this month.

Heuerman has worked at Lake Land College as an officer and worked for the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office for over two years before joining Lake Land in 2010.

Jones, chief deputy at the sheriff’s office told the News Gazette that he was disappointed but determined.

Heuerman hopes to find alternatives to incarceration in Champaign County.
