Panhandler arrested for possessing stolen vehicle

URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - A Champaign man who was panhandling outside a convenience store in Campustown was charged with Possessing a stolen vehicle on Thursday.

According to the Champaign Police report, at 11 P.M. Wednesday, police were called to a Circle K to talk to a man panhandling for gas money.

After police made contact with 23-year-old Donnell Cason, he ignored them and got into a pickup truck. Police ran a check on the plates and learned the truck was stolen from Kentucky. 

Police found a paycheck stub with Cason's name on it in the truck. He told police the truck belonged to a friend who left on foot after they arrived at the gas station. Cason was charged with possessing a stolen vehicle, a class 2 felony carrying penalties ranging from probation to 7 years in prison.

Cason has previous convictions for forgery, theft, obstructing justice, driving with a suspended license, and unlawful use of a forged credit card.
