Champaign lowers marijuana fine to $50

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WAND) - The fine for possession of marijuana in Champaign will now be $50, down from $350.

The city council approved lowering the fine at Tuesday's meeting, the News Gazette reports.

But the work is not over. The council plans to have an extended discussion next year to look at re-examining fines in place for other violations. That would include fines pertaining to alcohol and tobacco.

With this action, Champaign follows in the footsteps of Urbana. The fine there is also $50 for possession.

Governor-elect J.B. Pritzker has voiced his support for legalizing recreational marijuana across the state.
