Ousted Urbana Superintendent releases statement

URBANA, Ill. (WAND) - Dr. Donald Owen is speaking out after the Urbana School District 116 voted to place him on administrative leave.

Owen will be on paid leave until the end of his contract, which expires June 30, 2019.

He has been the superintendent since 2013 and has been with the District for close to 30 years.

Owen said he is not sure why the Board decided to remove him yet, saying only it was in the "best interest of the District."

The administrative changes were announced Nov. 30, 2018 on the District's website.

Owen said he learned about the move from social media after the announcement was shared by news media.

"I was shocked by the press release issued by the Board," Owen stated. "I have served the Board, educators, students, and families for almost 30 years, and I have yet to be given a written reason, explanation or plan for  [Notes:the Board's]  actions. I planned to retire from USD116, and I'm saddened that the Board would not provide me with a reason for taking this action at this time."

Owen said during a recent evaluation he was found to be fully meeting the Board's expectations.

He also said there has been no allegation of wrong-doing leveled against him.
