Phone scammer claims victim missed jury duty

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) – A phone scammer claims to represent police and tries to get money from victims, officers say.

A press release from Springfield police says a man on the phone is telling people they didn’t show up for jury duty and must pay to have an arrest warrant canceled. The scammer wants cash or a gift card.

Police are reminding the public that such a call is not the practice of any law enforcement agency. They say the police department should be called to report the scam.

“The Springfield Police Department thanks the community for their ongoing support and cooperation,” the release says.
