DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) – Two people have died after a crash with entrapment in Douglas County.

County deputies say the driver of a white 1997 Mercury sedan couldn’t slow down to avoid driving into the back of a skid-steer, which was working on debris removal. The people in the car became entrapped and needed help from firefighters. A passenger died at the scene and the Mercury driver later died at Carle Foundation Hospital. A third person in the car had to be airlifted to the same hospital.

Deputies were called to the crash at about 4:48 p.m. Friday. It happened near 1835 E. County Road 1450 N., which is in Camargo Township and east of Villa Grove.

Heritage Community Unit School District No. 8 said on Facebook that Villa Grove Spanish teacher John Jones and a family friend were killed. The district added that Jones’ wife, who was not identified, was “badly injured”.

“Heritage District has contacted our special education consortium (Friday) who makes counselors and social workers available in these tragic cases. (They) will be at school Monday morning,” the district said. “We are shocked and saddened and want to express our condolences to the Jones family.”
