Durbin hopes Gates will consider Springfield's 183rd for future missions

The fight continues to find a new flying mission for the National Guard's 183rd Fighter Wing in Springfield.

In 2005, the BRAC Commission decided to move the 183rd's F-16 fighter jets to Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Wednesday, Senator Dick Durbin sent a letter to Defense Secretary Robert Gates requesting a meeting in hopes Gates will consider an MC-12 mission for Springfield.

The Air Gorce has a number of MC-12 aircrafts to support intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan but hasn't decided where the aircraft will be based.
