New push to revive FutureGen project

A new push to bring the FutureGen project to Central Illinois.

Senator Dick Durbin is among lawmakers who sent a letter to Energy Secretary Steven Chu about the experimental, coal-fired power plant. If built, the plant would burn coal for power but store emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide underground. They want Chu to release the "record of decision," which is the final public decision certifying that the project meets environmental requirements.

The Energy Department pulled its support for FutureGen last year, blaming rising costs. Durbin and others believe the decision was based on presidential politics and hope to have more luck under the Obama administration.

FutureGen's builders picked Mattoon in eastern Illinois over other sites, including two in Texas.
