Crews continue demolition efforts in downtown Champaign
Crews will work Saturday to continue demolition efforts on Neil Street in downtown Champaign.
They are working to catch up and stay on schedule. Thursday asbestos was found in the building between floors and wrapped around pipes. A specialist contractor came in and got rid of it safely, according to EPA standards.
Deputy City Manager for Champaign, Craig Rost, says where it was in the building never posed a health risk but they had to get it out of there so it wouldn't get in the air during demolition.
One lane of Neil Street will be open by Friday the 13th. On February 27th, city leaders expect all of Neil Street to open and the demolition process be finished.
