Two state lawmakers hope to ban texting while driving

Text messaging while driving will be banned in Illinois if two state lawmakers have their way.

Pontiac State Senator Dan Rutherford is sponsoring a bill that would make it illegal to send or read text messages behind the wheel.

State Representative Bob Pritchard of Hinkley has drafted a more broadly written measure that makes distracted driving a crime.

State transportation officials say more than one thousand traffic accidents in the state last year involved cell phone use.

Authorities say the proposed laws may prompt motorists to pay more attention.
