New heart pump introduced at Prairie Heart Institute in Springfield
A new medical breakthrough is now available at the Prairie Heart Institute at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
It's called "the impella" and it's a mini heart pump. Severe heart attack patients can now be supported through the minimally invasive procedure that helps the heart maintain blood flow to the body using a tiny motorized pump.
St. John's is among the first in Illinois to use the impella device.
