U of I football player arrested, due in court, suspended from team
A University of Illinois football player was arrested Saturday. Josh Brent is due in court Monday morning at 8:30 and is now suspended from the football team.
The Champaign County jail says Brent was released Saturday evening after posting bond. He was brought in shortly before 6:00 a.m. Saturday for aggravated DUI. The jail says Brent had a suspended license and was speeding. The jail says state police officers arrested Brent in Champaign County, but state police say at this time they are waiting on a report and do not have information to release. The jail also says Brent had a Livingston County warrant on a traffic charge.
Brent is a defensive tackle on the football team, a sophomore, and is from Bloomington.
This is the statement Head Coach Ron Zook released on Brent's arrest:
"We are aware of the situation regarding Josh Brent's arrest over the weekend. He has been suspended from the team indefinitely until we able to gather all the facts. It's in the hands of the authorities right now and we will continue to monitor the information."
