Beardstown pork plant listed as worst nitrogen dumper in the country

CASS COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - A recent report from the Environmental Integrity Project says central Illinois is creating an excessive amount of waste.

That report found that, through 2017, the JBS USA Beardstown Pork Slaughterhouse was responsible for dumping more nitrogen than any other facility of its kind in the country.

Specifically, the EIP report says the plant was found to dump about 1,848 pounds of Nitrogen daily into a tributary for the Illinois River.

That’s the equivalent of Nitrogen in raw sewage from the entirety of Bloomington (Approx. 79,000 to Bloomington’s population of 78,000).
