CANTRALL, Ill. (WAND) - Police arrested a Sangamon County man Friday after a three-hour standoff.
Sheriff's deputies responded to Central Point Road in Cantrall late Friday morning on reports of one man chasing another and shooting a gun at one of his family members. Investigators are looking into what lead up to the incident between the two. However, neighbors tell WAND there was fighting going on at the suspect's house for the past week.
Deputies reported finding John Britz, 58, holding a gun and threatening to shoot law enforcement officers. It was reported that officers could hear the bullets fly past them when they were near his house.
Britz refused to come out of his house, according to a news release. Negotiators made contact with Britz, and he surrendered at around 2:30 p.m, on charges of Home Invasion, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Aggravated Discharge of a Weapon.
Brtiz served more than 20 years in prison on a murder charge dating to 1979, according to court records and neighbors.
The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the incident. They praised the efforts of the Sheriff's Tactical Response Unit and Tactical Negotiations Team, responding deputies, Illinois State Police, the Secretary of State Police, along with Sherman, Williamsville and Athens Police.
