CHAMPAIGN--The Champaign County Coroner is releasing the name of the man police found dead in a Champaign mobile home park Tuesday morning, while confirming how he was killed.
Champaign police discovered 27-year-old Damien Henderson dead in a car on Forsythia Drive in the Shadowwood Mobile Home Park a litle after 8 AM, killed by an apparent gunshot to the head.
"The cops stopped by and said that some fella didn't make it that was out here," said Gary Garrett, a Shadowwood resident who lives across the street from where Henderson was found.
"We wouldn't have seen him because the windows were frosted over."
It was clear to officers that Henderson suffered from an obvious injury and his death was considered suspicious from the start. An autopsy performed Tuesday afternoon reveals that he was killed by a gunshot to the head.
"We heard a noise a pop, but once in a while a transformer or something will blow and it will make a noise and you just don't think about it if it's nothing that you don't see," said Garrett. "And so we slept through it 'til this morning."
Champaign police and the county coroner are treating Henderson's death as a homicide. Nearby neighbors want anyone involved in the killing off their streets.
"When it gets this close to home you're really worried about your whole family and what's going on and what could happen in your sleep because since this did happen like that," said Garrett. "So I mean, makes me feel a little unsafe."
