MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) – Two car crash victim, both over the age of 80, died Thursday.
Troopers say the happened at about 4:11 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 55 southbound at mile post 73. State police say they don’t know why the car left the road on the right-hand side and rolled more than once.
The driver, identified as 81-year-old Springfield man Robert Carlton, and 80-year-old passenger Linda Carlton have both died. Robert Carlton passed away at the scene of the crash, and Linda Carlton died at St. John's Hospital after she was airlifted from the scene.
Troopers say the crash forced them to shut down I-55 at the crash site for one hour while they cleared the scene.
State police are continuing to investigate the crash. They say family must be notified before names will be released.
