URBANA, Ill. (WAND) – A man is accused of sexually abusing two girls he was caring for.
The suspect is 43-year-old Michael W. Shonkwiler. Deputies say he kissed and sexually touched a girl, who is now a teen, and her friend in 2012 after buying her alcohol when she was in his care.
The News-Gazette says the teen reported the abuse in October when talking with deputies. Both victims told Children’s Advocacy Center experts more information in interviews, leading to charges against Shonkwiler. The newspaper says the suspect admitted to inappropriately touching one of the girls while talking with detectives.
Shonkwiler is facing a charge of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and three other aggravated criminal sexual abuse counts. He could spend between six and 60 years in prison if convicted of the predatory charge. The News-Gazette says his bond in Champaign County is set at $150,000.
