MATTOON, Il. (WAND) - Coming together to get kids active and healthy throughout summer break.
Sarah Bush Lincoln Healthy Communities and the Mattoon Public Library teamed up for a summer reading and running program. Organizers say this program stems from the healthy education program they do throughout the school year.
The summer program engages kids in book discussions, teaches them nutrition, and trains them for a 5K. "The whole idea is we are helping kids get fit. We are teaching them some character skills through the books," Laura Bollan, the Director of Healthy Communities explains.
Bollan says at one time Coles County's obesity rates were higher than the state average. Bollan explains, the group decided to fix that rate by working more with kids in schools and throughout the summer to teach them about nutrition and healthy lifestyles.
Katrina Winograd says this program teaches her daughter how important it is to strengthen her mind and her body.
