DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Humane Society of Decatur and Macon County announced that its president, Irene Peterson, died over the weekend.

According to the Humane Society's Facebook, Peterson became involved with the organization in 2000.

She was elected president in 2001.

The Humane Society added that Peterson's goal of establishing a spay and neuter clinic was achieved in January and has already helped over 300 animals.

"Because of Irene's tireless efforts, many thousands of animals were given a second chance and found loving homes. Her heart for animals was extraordinary, and her kindness will leave a lasting legacy within our organization and throughout the community," the Humane Society said in a Facebook post on Sunday.
