SEDALIA, MO. – WAND News has learned a Marine recruiter stationed at Marine Corps Recruiting sub-station Jefferson City subdued an assailant earlier this month.
Gunnery Sergeant Stephen Whitaker, a Decatur, Illinois native, observed the aftermath of a car crash and proceeded to help remove a driver from the wreckage.
According to a statement he made to the police, Whitaker observed the driver may have been intoxicated and contacted emergency services and police.
The driver then allegedly fled and forced himself into a home near the scene accident. Whitaker chased the individual and placed himself between the driver and the couple that resides in the home until the driver left and was met by proper authorities, according to police.
Whitaker graduated from Argenta-Oreana High School in 2000 and enlisted into the Marine Corps.
He is a 15-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and currently serves as the assistant staff non-commissioned officer in charge for Marine Corps Recruiting substation Jefferson City.
