Local UFC legend injured in train crash

RAYMOND, Ill. (WAND) - A local UFC legend who was seriously injured in a truck versus train crash in Montgomery County Friday morning is receiving treatment at a Springfield hospital.

ISP officials say the crash happened on Beelers Trail in Montgomery County at about 10:45 a.m.  According to the preliminary investigation into the crash, a truck was traveling east on Beelers Trail when it crossed a set of railroad tracks, directly in front of a train.  The train struck the passenger side of the truck.

Troopers say the truck's driver, identified as Hillsboro resident Matt Hughes, 43, was seriously injured in the crash, and was airlifted to a Springfield hospital for treatment.  According to a statement released from HSHS St. John's Hospital, Hughes was stabilized by the hospital's Regional Trauma Team, and continues to recover.

Hughes is a former two-time UFC Welterweight Champion and UFC Hall of Fame inductee.  The official UFC Twitter page sent out the following tweet:
