LyondellBasell Tuscola Plant faces excess flaring due to malfunction

TUSCOLA, Ill. (WAND) - Sunday at approximately 1 P.M. the LyondellBasell Tuscola Plant experienced a power failure that resulted in significant flaring.

The company says flares are a safety feature designed to securely burn excess material during an operational interruption, which cannot be recovered or recycled.

Much black smoke was generated from a loss of steam to the flare system. There was no fire at the plant. No injuries were reported as a result of this incident.

LyondellBasell says they are working to eliminate the black smoke and flaring as quickly as possible.

The products being burned in the flare are primarily ethanol and ethylene which are used in consumer products.

The company says it will provide more information as it becomes available.

LyondellBasell is one of the largest plastics, chemicals, and refining companies in the world.
