TUSCOLA, Ill. (WAND)- Cronus Fertilizers have signed a contract with thyssenkrupp Industrial Solutions to build a fertilizer plant near Tuscola, the company announced Monday.
The project, which Cronus first announced in 2014, had been delayed by the withdrawal of a contractor and the expiration of some public funds for the project. In their announcement, Cronus said plans are on track for a groundbreaking in 2019.
“Thyssenkrupp is a huge name. It brings a lot of international bona fides,” said Sen. Chapin Rose, R-51. “They’ve actually built plants like this around the world before.”
The plant would produce up to 2,300 metric tons of ammonia per day, company officials said.
Local economic development officials have said the project could bring 1,500 construction jobs and 150 permanent jobs and bring millions of dollars to the local economy.
