DECATUR Ill. (WAND) - Old King's Orchard Community Center held a Back to School Free Rummage and hundreds of people showed up ready to receive all the goodies.
The organizers had everything from backpacks, pens, pencils, paper and even clothes.
"We are giving out school supplies for middle school and high school students and we have a free rummage for pre-k through grade 12. Where each student gets to choose 6 items from shoes, clothes, whatever they might need to start school on a good note" said Board President Alida Graham.
Community members were standing outside as early as 8:30 a.m. and had to open the doors a little before 10:00 a.m. and King's Orchard ran out of book bags within the first 30 minutes.
One community member said she's been attending the rummage since she was a kid and is happy to continue her tradition with her children. She says it's important to remind people that there are people who truly need these items and she's happy this is held each year. School uniforms get expensive and most of the time, the uniforms are new or worn once that previous children outgrew.
King's Orchard Community Center is accepting additional donations until Wednesday for all the kids that did not get a chance to receive a book bag. Community members are encouraged to drop of any donations at 815 N Church Street.
