MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) – A man tried to dispose of a weapon and drugs after his involvement in a car crash, police say.
Officers say just before midnight on June 4, Ryan Cornell, 19, swerved to avoid hitting a car at the Route 121 and Interstate 72 interchange and ended up in a median. The crash set off his airbags. Police say witnesses watched Cornell get out of his car and throw a black briefcase under a tree or bush near a ditch.
Officers say they found that briefcase, which had a loaded .9 mm handgun and drugs. They say meth was hidden under the false bottom of a mug, in a bag containing just over 1 teaspoon of the drug, while a purple plastic container in the briefcase had about .45 ounces of marijuana.
The briefcase also had a digital scale in it.
Cornell is facing charges of armed violence, possession of a weapon by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm and several drug possession counts. He is behind bars in Macon County with a bond set at $75,000.
He has a conviction for meth delivery on his record.
