Sex offender gets probation after visiting school

DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) – A registered sex offender who visited a Decatur school was sentenced to probation.

Benjamin Mattingly will serve 24 months on probation after he went to Persons Elementary School for an after-hours event on Jan. 25. He served three years in prison for sexually abusing a child under 13 years old in 2007.

Mattingly is not allowed to come within 500 feet of a school. The principal at Persons told WAND-TV the school didn’t realize Mattingly was a registered offender until the end of the event.

Police say Mattingly admitted to not having permission from the school or superintendent’s office to be there.

Along with probation, Mattingly has to pay a $300 fine and other court costs.
