Urbana teacher accused of sexual relationship with student

Wednesday evening Urbana high school math teacher Tammy Bond was arrested after police said she had a sexual relationship with one of her 16-year-old students.

The 45-year-old woman is jailed in Champaign County on $50,000 bond. She was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault.

A police report said the mother of a 16-year-old student started noticing her child getting gifts and special privileges from the teacher. The report noted that the boy even spent time with Bond outside of school. This was going on for a few months.  A couple of days ago, Urbana police officers started investigating the situation.

Police said they got statements from other people involved and collected evidence like cellphones. Police said inappropriate sexual contact had happened between the student and the teacher off school grounds. The Urbana school district then suspended Tammy Bond and according to the high school's website, Bond also ran the Fellowship of Christian Athlete's Club.

Bond also made headlines in 2009, but for an entirely different reason. WAND partner the Champaign News Gazette highlighted her in an article entitled: "1st-year Urbana teacher has already a made treasured bond." The article mentioned how Bond is a role model being the mother of a former WNBA player and has two degrees.  The News Gazette article also described the passion Bond shows as a teacher and the confidence she instills in her students.

Tammy Bond will be arraigned Thursday.
