EFFINGHAM, Ill. (WAND)-Five animals were found dead as the result of a house fire in Effingham.

According to Effingham Fire Chief Brant Yochum, crews were called out to the 1300 block of S Willow St. for a report of a house full of smoke on Monday.

Fire crews said upon arrival, there was smoke showing from the exterior rear of the house, and began an aggressive interior fire attack to contain the fire in the basement.

Firefighters located 3 cats, and 2 dogs during a search of the structure.

Crews were on the scene for just under two hours.

The fire is still under investigation. Damage is estimated at $100,000.

Effingham Fire Department was assisted by Effingham City Dispatch, Effingham Police Department, Rural Med EMS, Teutopolis FPD, Shumway FPD, and Altamont FPD. Station coverage was provided by Dieterich FPDs.
