MATTOON, Ill. (WAND) — No one was injured from an early morning house fire in Mattoon, according to the Mattoon Fire Department.

Firefighters were dispatched to a home in the 3400 block of Prairie Avenue for a structure fire around 4 a.m. Thursday morning. When crews arrived to the 1.5 story home, they found heavy smoke and fire visible.

The residents of the home confirmed that everyone had safely escaped.

Two hose lines were deployed to knock out a large portion of the fire. Crews entered the home but were met with heavy smoke and heat on the second floor. A vent hole was cut in the roof to allow the heat to escape.

It was determined that the fire was behind the knee walls of the upstairs living space.

The department deemed the fire under control after about an hour.

No injuries were reported from occupants or firefighters. The Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance to the occupants as the house is currently considered uninhabitable.

The fire is under investigation.

The Mattoon Fire Department was assisted by Coles/Moultrie 911 (Ccom), Mattoon Police Department, Charleston Fire Department, Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance, Ameren, and the American Red Cross.
