DECATUR, Ill. -- Police say scammers have taken millions of people's credit card data from across the country, and it's happening to people right here in Central Illinois. It could involve up to ten million Visa and MasterCard accounts.
It happened to Steph Wilson in Decatur. She received e-mails notifying her of charges on her PayPal account, which hadn't been used for months. The scammers stole and spent almost $300.
Local police say they deal with a lot of credit card scams, and warn of sketchy websites.
"If they're good and you can trust them or you think you can trust them, you can use them," said Macon County Sgt. Lydell Kallenbach. "But you can't trust everybody, so you always take a chance."
If it happens to you, police can file a report. But Kallenbach said the first thing people should do is call their credit card company to cancel the card immediately.
