MORE DETAILS – Illinois State Police say a trooper involved in a crash Saturday night that left a Decatur woman dead was on his way to respond to the officer shooting in Mahomet.

The state trooper was heading north on Oakland Avenue, just south of Harrison Avenue in Decatur, at around 11:02 PM en route to intercept a suspect who shot a police officer in Mahomet. He had activated his emergency lights and sirens and, according to ISP officials, the suspect was last seen heading south on Illinois Route 47 toward Interstate 72.

At that time, a 26-year-old Decatur woman was driving west on Harrison Avenue, approaching the intersection of Oakland Avenue, in a Honda Odyssey.

As the trooper’s vehicle was approaching the Harrison Avenue intersection, the Honda pulled into the intersection, turning south on Oakland Avenue into the path of the emergency vehicle. The trooper was unable to avoid the woman’s car and struck the driver’s side of the vehicle, causing extensive damage to both vehicles and injuring both drivers.

The woman was taken to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead from her injuries. Her name is still being withheld as of Sunday afternoon.

The trooper was last reported to be in critical condition at an area hospital.

ISP Director Leo Schmitz released a statement at 1:29 PM on Sunday, May 8, extending condolences on behalf of the Illinois State Police to the woman’s family.

“It saddens me to announce a young mother of two was fatally injured in a car crash with an Illinois State Trooper last night. At this difficult time, the Illinois State Police extend its sincerest condolences to her family and continues to investigate this crash. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and the ISP Trooper,” Schmitz wrote.

There are no charges filed at this time, and the crash remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.
