First armadillo sighting in Macon County

Posted: Updated:

MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) - The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says a rare find in central Illinois could become more common, thanks to recent mild winters.

IDNR officials say an armadillo was found on the side of a road in Macon County over the weekend.  While this is the first armadillo sighting in Macon County, officials say it is not uncommon for them to be seen in southern Illinois.

If you do encounter an armadillo in your area, or hit one on the highway, IDNR officials are urging people to not touch the animal, as they could be carrying a disease.
