Scalise, Davis reflect on shooting, re-election campaign

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — House Majority Whip Steve Scalise is endorsing fellow Republican Rodney Davis in his re-election campaign.

Scalise, R-LA, joined Davis for a Springfield fundraiser tonight.

The Louisiana Republican is still recovering from being shot last June during a congressional baseball practice.

Davis was also on that field playing catcher.

“When I got my bearings that fateful morning, I saw him laying on the ground,” Davis said. “He was motionless. I didn’t think it was going to be a good outcome.”

Scalise pulled through and nine surgeries later, he hopes his story of recovery will spur additional moments of bipartisanship in Washington.

“You can build good bonds on both sides of the aisle, even as a conservative being friends with a liberal,” Scalise said. “You shouldn’t make your political differences personal.”

No matter the political landscape on Capitol Hill, Scalise says Davis will fight for central Illinois and pass meaningful legislation for his district.

“[Davis] is somebody who is not just another voting member of Congress who sits in the back row and pushes a green or red button,” Scalise said. “He rolls up his sleeves and gets to work to pass an agenda that gets our country back on track.”
