Study: 71 percent of Illinoisans at prime military recruitment age not eligible to enlist

(WAND) - Many young people in the state of Illinois cannot enter the military.

A new study found 71 percent of those in Illinois at the prime military recruitment age cannot get in.

The main factors hindering people from enlisting are a lack of a high school degree, drug use and criminal records, and physical fitness.

The group Mission Readiness is asking lawmakers to pass laws to help put more young people on the right path.

The group said it starts with quality child care.

Mission Readiness works to ensure the U.S. has enough people qualified to join the military.
