"Monk on a Bike" makes stop in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) - A Buddhist monk from Japan is bicycling across the U.S. in support of the Children's Hospital Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Simon Gregory Filson started his "Monk on a Bike" project in early May in San Francisco.

"I became a Soto Zen monk in 2010, at a small temple near Tokyo," Filson explained. "Because of this temple's limitations, I entered a monastery in Fukui Prefecture where I trained extensively for 3 years, moving thence to Jomanji Temple in Tokushima, where I currently reside."

Filson said, "Following a little cancer scare a few years ago, I felt compelled to actually do something to try and help people; this in the mandate of all monks."

He is making a stop in Springfield, and then proceeding across Illinois, into Indiana, and on towards the Capitol Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C.

So far, he has raised $4,948 of his $5,000 goal on GoFundMe.

They money will go towards defraying the cost of his travels and to supporting the children's hospital.
