DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield (BGCCIL) cut the ribbon on a new outdoor basketball court on Monday. 

The Springfield Police Department sponsored the court, which was funded by Sen. Doris Turner's community connections grant.

It is one of two community courts funded by the grant to provide safe, positive spaces for kids and families to spend time.

"Getting kids outside, recreation activities, being able to stay open later and provide services beyond school time, just gives kids a safe space to come and play and enjoy themselves," said BGCCIL CEO and Executive Director Tiffany Mathis Posey. 

Springfield PD said it hopes the court will have a lasting impact on the community.
