DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The African American Cultural and Genealogical Society of Illinois Museum hosted a Kwanza celebration in Decatur on Saturday afternoon.
The event occurred at the Decatur Township Office Building from 4-6:00 p.m.
This year's theme was "Striving to Keep Faith and Unity Alive," with Jeremy Norris as a guest speaker.
Kwanza is celebrated from December 26 until January 1. The week-long holiday is not religious. According to NBC New York, Kwanza was established in 1966 by activist and author Maulan Ron Karenga.
The event also raised awareness for homeless people with a sock collection for local shelters.
If you want to donate socks to local shelters or cash, visit the museum at 235 Eldorado St. in Decatur. You can also donate to their Cash App, $AACGSMuseum.
If you have any other questions, give them a call at 217-429-7458
