SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND)- Springfield is becoming a leader in sustainable technology. CWLP is at the forefront of a new carbon capture project.

The pilot plant began construction two years ago and is expected to be operational by March.

The plant will capture carbon dioxide produced at a CWIP plant to prevent it from being released as a greenhouse gas. Unlike sequestration projects that inject CO2 underground, this process will utilize the gas above ground.

Dr. Kevin O'Brien- Director, Illinois Sustainable Technology Center said, "Taking it and for example growing algae. Algae used for animal feed as well as for bio-char for agricultural applications. There's potential to take that CO2 and inject it into concrete- its been shown to make the concrete stronger."

During Tuesday night's city council meeting, the council learned that no CO2 pipelines will be involved in the project.
