SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — Two people have been transported to the hospital with injuries from a natural gas explosion.

The victims are two men, aged 64 and 71. The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office said their injuries are serious but not thought to be life threatening.

Both Springfield Police and Fire, Grandview Police, and the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department are on the scene at the 3300 block of E. Enos Avenue. Springfield Fire Fighters Local 37 have advised people to stay away from the area of E. Enos/Dirksen until they secure the scene.

Deputies who were first on scene said the men were working on a hot water heater at the time of the explosion.

Springfield Fire reported that the fire was out by 12:35 p.m. and crews plan to clear the scene around 1:30 p.m. Investigators will remain at the site to complete their work.
