DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - The Macon County Sheriff's Office is warning the community of phone scams involving people impersonating county officials.

According to the office, the first call had a man identifying himself as a Pre-Trial Services representative, and said they needed payment to get an inmate out of jail.

Then, the second caller claimed they were Lt. Jamie Belcher and needed several thousand dollars so the person on the line wouldn't be arrested after missing jury duty.

That caller even left a callback number, which led to a recording saying it's Belcher with Macon County Investigations.

The sheriff's office emphasized that those instances were scams because Macon County officials will never ask for money to pay for fines or other services.

If you receive a similar call, hang up the phone and don't give out any personal information or send money.
