DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — The Decatur Public Transit System (DPTS) is teaming up with Modeshift to make all of their services cashless.
In the coming months, physical fare boxes will be removed from DPTS buses, and cash will no longer be accepted.
Instead, Modeshift kiosks will be installed on the busses. Riders will need "rider's cards" which they can reload and tap to the kiosks to pay.
DPTS says there is also an app in development that will generate QR codes for people to scan and pay on their phones.Â
Anyone that does not have a credit or debit card can reload their rider's card with cash at a payment terminal at the Senator Severns Transit Center. DPTS says they are looking at adding more terminals in other locations.
Installation of the Modeshift kiosks is expected to happen over the next three to four months. DPTS says they will still accept cash while they integrate the new technology.
