SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND)- The Springfield school board is signing off on an increase for the NAACP alternative education program.

Expelled students, who are expelled without a "stay" are not eligible for traditional alternative education programs. But the NAACP initiative ensures no student falls between the gaps.

District 186 pays to house students in the Springfield office where they receive one-on-one support.

District 186 Superintendent Jennifer Gill said, "Oftentimes you'll hear in our board meetings where we say students are expelled without a program. But that's not true, we have a wonderful partnership with the NAACP that serves our students, gets them back into school so they can stay in school and be successful. So nobody is ever expelled to home or without a program in District 186."

Students who are struggling in their home school, but are not expelled, are also sometimes placed in the program.

The contract agreed upon at Monday nights board meeting will increase funding from District 186 from $25,000 to $30,000.
