PIATT COUNTY, Ill. (WAND) – Firefighters say the man killed in an Interstate 74 crash Tuesday was one of their own.
The Northern Piatt Fire Department said in a Facebook post that 46-year-old Charles McCrone was a Pesotum firefighter. Crews say they escorted McCrone's body to the McLean County Medical Examiner.
Troopers said the crash happened after 10 a.m. Tuesday at the I-74 exit near Mansfield (mile marker 166), when McCrone couldn’t stop his van in time as a semi-truck and trailer in front of him slowed down because of traffic. They say the van crashed into the back of the trailer.
State police say McCrone, who died at the scene, did not have a seat belt on. The semi-truck driver, a woman from Minnesota, was wearing one.
The Piatt County Coroner released McCrone’s identity Wednesday.
