DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) — Haz Mat crews from the Decatur Fire Department spent 5 to 6 hours working on an ammonia leak on Thursday afternoon.
Crews responded to 520 N. Front Street at noon. They ordered businesses in the area to evacuate or protect in place by closing all doors and windows.Â
The business owner told firefighters employees had been working in the basement earlier in the day and that they had an unknown vapor release from a tank. They ventilated the basement and left, coming back later in the day.Â
DFD said there had been an ammonia leak, but it was not actively leaking when they arrived.
Crews spent six hours monitoring vapors, using ventilation fans, and using water streams to suppress vapors and lower ammonia concentrations to a safe level.Â
